Wales wing Rio Dyer has signed a new contract with the Dragons, ending speculation over a move to England following interest from a number of Gallagher Premiership clubs.

The 24-year-old has signed what the Gwent club are calling a "multi-year deal" in what is a big boost to not only the Dragons, but Warren Gatland and Wales, too.

During a week which saw star wing Louis Rees-Zammit quit the sport for a new journey into the NFL and Cardiff-born Immanuel Feyi-Waboso opt to play for England, seeing Dyer commit his future to Wales is a welcome bonus.

Dyer has only 14 Wales caps and would be short of the requisite 25 caps by the end of the season if he opted for a move over the bridge, thankfully for Gatland and Co, that is now not a consideration. Saracens were thought to be keenly monitoring his situation, while clubs in France were also credited with interest, too.

“It’s a proud moment for me to sign and show my commitment to my home club,” said Dyer, who has 18 tries in 52 appearances for the Men of Gwent.

“I’ve been here since I was with the Under-16s, have grown up alongside many of my team-mates and really enjoy the environment that has been built here by Dai Flanagan.

"We have a lot of talent in the squad that I believe we can grow with. We haven't had the best of years or seasons, but we're got something good going on here now and everyone's buying into it.

"We are confident we can turn the stigma around and start getting more wins and putting in better performances not only for ourselves but also for our fans who come to watch and support us throughout."

Speaking of Dyer, who was this week named in Gatland's Six Nations squad, Dragons boss Dai Flanagan added: “We are absolutely delighted that Rio has signed a new contract and committed to his home club.

“We want to retain our best young talent and build our club around talented, driven, and ambitious Gwent men who are proud to represent us. Rio personifies that and is a key figure for us going forward.

“Rio’s development over the last few seasons, for both club and country, has been truly impressive, alongside his attitude, professionalism, and desire to continue to improve.

“He wants to be a part of what we are building here in the long-term and we’re thrilled that his story will now continue as a Dragon.”
