Inside the city centre home of a Welsh music legend thousands of people walk by every day
A home full of history as well as packed with character and a few surprises too
Sometimes a house with a unique history can be quite humble about its past and this is probably the case for this wonderful terrace house, with the people of Cardiff wandering past it maybe are unaware of the musical providence of someone who was born inside the four walls.
There is a blue plague attached to its façade but you would probably need to tip toe up the front garden path to be able to see what it says. The plaque commemorates one of Wales' most celebrated composers and songwriters but maybe for some people he is as little known as his childhood home - or so they might think.
The house once belonged to husband and wife Clara and David, a celebrated music teacher and a council rent collector, but their son Ivor became so important in the history of British music that he has a internationally renowned award named after him. The Ivor Novello Awards are the world's most prestigious music awards for songwriters and composers, affectionately known as 'The Ivors'. In existence since 1956 the prize celebrates and has been won by stars such as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Adele, Stormzy and Amy Winehouse.
And it all began at this five-bedroom terraced house in Cardiff city centre called Llwyn yr Eos, where David Ivor Davies was born in 1893. The plaque attached to the house reads: “This boy became a Ruritanian King and gave his people dreams and songs to sing.”
He was one of the early 20th century’s most successful actors and composers, his talent shining through in writing songs, musical plays and comedies with arguably the most well-known song being 'Keep the Home Fires Burning', his top musical was probably 'King's Rhapsody', and he appeared in many movies, including Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Lodger'.
But 2013 until this son of the capital was only remembered via the blue plaque within the city on this house for sale. That changed when an £80,000, seven-foot bronze sculpture showing the composer at work and looking over his right shoulder was unveiled between the Wales Millennium Centre and Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay. Find out more about that here.
Now you can be part of the Ivor Novello story with your own chapter if you become the new owner of his childhood home, who knows, it might even conjure a spark of creativity to have a go at writing a song too.
The house is for sale for offers over £550,000 with Moginie James, Pontcanna. Call 029 2034 4434 to find out more, plus for more property and renovation stories join our Amazing Welsh Homes Facebook group here.
