Scarlets faced Super Rugby heavyweights Crusaders in a training session at Clifton College in Bristol.

With the Six Nations in full swing, and the Super Rugby teams on their respective pre-season tours, it was the perfect time for the squads to come together.

Crusaders are touring the UK and Ireland, having played Irish province Munster last weekend. The New Zealand side, who are widely considered to be the best club side in world rugby, lost 21-19 in a tight game.

They are next up against Bristol Bears on Friday night at Ashton Gate, and have been training at Clifton College ahead of this clash.

Scarlets head coach and former Wales star Dwayne Peel explained the Llanelli club contacted the Kiwi side to see if they'd like to train together, and the latter keenly accepted that invitation.

With no United Rugby Championship action due to the Six Nations, Peel saw it as the perfect opportunity for his team to maintain their fitness and refine their skillset against an elite rugby side. Peel called them the "trendsetters and standard setters for the last 30 years".

"I think it was a great exercise for both teams really, I know they've got a northern hemisphere tour, so in the middle of that week it was great to have that interaction with the players and coaches to share some ideas and insight. It was a good training session, very competitive. There's good we can take from it, definitely, moving forward into the friendly against Exeter this week and back into the league next week."

Ex-All Black Vaea Fifita, who know represents Tonga at international level, looked to be familiar with some of the Crusaders coaches. Leigh Halfpenny was reunited with his former team-mates in the training session, but has recently received news that he is injured for three to four months. You can read more about that here.

Both sets of players applauded in unison after some kind words from Crusaders scrum-half and former England star Willi Heinz.
