An investigation has been launched after the death of a 44-year-old woman an address in Maesteg. South Wales Police has referred itself to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) over its prior contact with the woman.

A person has been arrested in connection with the unexplained death of a woman. Officers from South Wales Police were called to an address in Mynydd Glas in Caerau, Maesteg, at around 7.10am on Wednesday (February 7).

They were responding to a report of concern for the welfare of a woman. The woman was confirmed dead at the scene and enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause. Her death is currently being treated as unexplained.

A 25-year-old woman who was known to the victim has been arrested in connection with the death. She is currently in custody while inquiries continue. The family of the 44-year-old woman have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. There will be a police presence in the area while the investigation continues.

An IOPC spokesperson: said: "We can confirm we have received a referral from South Wales Police regarding police contact prior to the body of a woman being found on February 7 at an address in Caerau, Maesteg. We are presently assessing the referral to determine whether any action is required by the IOPC.”

A statement from the police said: "South Wales Police has made a referral to the IOPC. We await their response."
