Netflix reportedly wants to take Gavin & Stacey from the BBC amid reports the Welsh sitcom is making a comeback. Deadline reported on Tuesday that a Gavin & Stacey Christmas special is in the works and is set to air five years on from the previous special.

The TV and film industry news website understands that the new episode is in development/pre-production and will be filmed this summer. It was brilliant news for fans of hugely popular show after the last episode ended with a cliffhanger with Nessa (Ruth Jones) proposing to Smithy (James Corden) leading viewers to believe that the show will eventually return

Now sources have said that streaming giant Netflix is battling to steal the show from the BBC, reports The Sun. A source told the newspaper that BBC's chief content officer Charlotte Moore has spoken to the show's creators, Corden and Jones, and "made it clear she wants the show to stay put" at the BBC but the streaming giant has "also made it very, very explicit that they want to air it". Netflix's CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters are said to be “extremely excited” at the prospect of landing the show, which has been broadcast by the BBC since 2007. Set in Barry in south Wales and Billericay in Essex Gavin & Stacey is one of the most-watched sitcoms of all time and the 2019 Christmas special was the most-watched show in a decade at more than 18m viewers. It follows the titular characters, and their families, as their relationships progressed. Deadline reports that the majority of the main cast will likely return for the special. Other than Corden and Jones Gavin & Stacey stars Mathew Horne and Joanna Page in the titular roles along with an ensemble cast including Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb, and Julia Davis.

The show is produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow, Jones’ Tidy Productions, and Fulwell 73, which is co-owned by Corden. WalesOnline approached the BBC for comment on whether there was any truth to the reports that Gavin & Stacey would be returning. The broadcaster in turn declined to comment.
