Parts of Wales could see heavy snowfall on Thursday, February 8, according to the Met Office. Data shows areas affected in Wales could see between 5cm and 10cm of snow, with 20cm possible in some places.

The areas most affected include parts of north and mid Wales, particularly on ground above 200 metres. There is also a risk of frozen rain over high ground later in the day, with drifting snow possible into surrounding areas. Due to the predicted weather conditions all schools in one north Wales county are set to shut on Thursday. The closures across Flintshire have been announced ahead of an amber weather warning for snow and ice on Thursday It is in place from 8am to 3pm and covers Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham.

Ysgol Treffynnon, a secondary school in Holywell, posted the message at 3.44pm today: "We have been instructed by the local authority that all school's (sic) in Flintshire are to close tomorrow due to the forecasted adverse weather conditions."

Police in the region also urged drivers to take extra care when travelling. A spokesman said: "The Met Office has issued a weather warning for snow for parts of North Wales from 6am tomorrow (Thursday) until 6am on Friday. Please take extra care - the weather conditions that are forecast may make driving and walking conditions tricky in some places. If you have to travel - please plan ahead, drive to the conditions and remember to leave a greater distance between you and the vehicle in front."

Meanwhile, a 24-hour yellow alert for snow for all of north and Mid Wales is in force from 6am Thursday until 6am on Friday, as cold winter weather sweeps in. A yellow alert for rain has also been issued for south Wales between 2am Thursday and 6am Friday. More snow is forecast for Friday and Saturday in northwest Wales. Snow is also likely on Friday and Saturday in parts of Scotland, the Pennines and Lakeland Fells.
