When a focus group of UK voters were asked who should lead the country it wasn't Rishi Sunak or Sir Keir Starmer who came top of their list. It was, in fact consumer champion Martin Lewis who they suggested for the next Prime Minister.

But his savage response to the honour shows that it will not be happening any time soon. The former cardiff-university>Cardiff University student said he would "rather wire my nipples to electrodes" than to enter the world of politics.

The Money Saving Expert founder, who is considered one of the country's most trusted voices, took to social media to stamp out any speculation he had his eye on entering Downing Street. It came after his name was repeatedly raised as someone who would make a good PM in a focus group of 50 voters for the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme.

There were other names suggested, including Sir Alex Ferguson, Alan Sugar and Carol Vorderman, but Martin was the favourite.

After the programme went out, Mr Lewis posted: "That's flattering, thank you very kindly, but I'd rather wire my nipples to electrodes. Our system is overly adversarial - mandating politicians to lie and sell policies they disagree with in order to hold the party line.

"It is structured with an official "opposition" designed to oppose for the sake of it. Few can thrive in that environment. I believe in public service, but my mental health isn't robust enough. I wouldn't subject my family to it - would you?"

He did added: "Ps I admire politicians of all sides who try. Most I meet are actually trying to do good. But in the end to do that you have to play the system and be incredibly mentally robust."

The focus groups did agree that they were upset and frustrated about the state of the country, which was "in crisis", "depressing" and "dishonest and messed up". And they did not spare the feelings of the Conservative and Labour leaders.

"Incompetent cretin", "dull" and " "not strong enough" was how some put it. For months, the polls have shown Labour convincingly ahead - with some surveys pointing to a massive majority.

Just two Conservative MPs would remain in Wales after the next general election as the party faces being all but wiped out, the latest poll has shown. A poll of 14,000 people has predicted Rishi Sunak's losses could be record-breaking with the possibility of Labour replicating victory on the scale of their 1997 landslide. Read more here.

The YouGov poll, published in The Telegraph, shows Labour would take 385 seats and Conservatives dropping to 169. For the Tories that's 196 fewer seats than in 2019, which would be more than the 178 Sir John Major lost in 1997. It would mean Sir Keir Starmer would enter Downing Street with a majority of 120.
