Heavy rain in parts of Wales has lead to two flood warnings and 10 flood alerts being issued across the country on Tuesday morning. A railway line was also flooded for a time.

The two flood warnings were in place for the River Wye at Tintern and Chepstow. Natural Resources Wales also had alerts in place for the whole north Wales coast, the Wye Estuary at Monmouthshire, the Usk Estuary, the Swansea Bay and the Gower coast, the tidal area at Crofty, the Llyn Peninsula and Cardigan Bay coastline and south Pembrokeshire.

By Tuesday afternoon the flood alerts had reduced to six, mainly around coastal areas.

National Rail has also issued a warning of flooding between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth which meant that all lines were blocked for a time on Tuesday morning but has resumed by 12.30pm. Part of the A40 near Monmouth also remains closed after a landslide following heavy rain last week. Traffic Wales has warning of "poor driving conditions" on the M4 across south Wales.

The rain is set to continue through Tuesday with the Met Office forecast saying: "A mostly cloudy day with outbreaks of rain feeding northeastwards across the country, turning locally heavy during the afternoon, though becoming lighter and more patchy towards evening. Mild, but breezy. A cloudy and wet night, with some heavy bursts at times, especially over higher ground."

Flood alerts in coastal areas

The number of flood alerts has reduced to six. They are mainly along coastal areas where there is a warning of high tides.

Natural Resources Wales says: "The combination of high tides, forecast winds and wave heights give a risk of flooding around the high tides between Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th February. Be careful on beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths, roads, low lying land, close to the estuary. Be careful as sea spray and waves could be dangerous and could contain debris."
