While we're hopefully getting towards the end of it, with the mornings and evenings getting a little lighter and some fairly mild weather recently, the British winter can seem long. Many of us dream of jumping on a plane and escaping to warmer climes.
But you might be put off by the idea that you'll need to fly long-haul at this time of year to find some sun. However, that's not the case.
Just a few hours away from the UK there's a beautiful island that boasts decent temperatures, even in February. Madeira is part of Portugal, but is just 280 nautical miles from the African coast, while being 540 nautical miles from the European continent.
Together with the islands of Porto Santo and Desertas and the Selvagens, Madeira forms an autonomous region of the country of Portugal. In winter, Madeira has much milder temperatures than in mainland Portugal - and the UK. According to Thomas Cook, average daytime temperatures in February are 18c.
The beautiful island, which is the most densely populated Portuguese island, is perfect for all sorts of fun, reports the Express. It is also ideal for nature lovers with its beautiful nature walks and hikes, and abundant wildlife.
Traditional markets are also a must-see on this island and you'll be amazed by the colourful and exotic fruits on offer. Natural pools, which are among some of the most beautiful in Europe, are also dotted around the island.
It's also an easy trip from the UK - perfect for escaping the chilly winter weather. The average flight time from London to Madeira is just 3 hours 50 minutes. There are two flights per day all year round from Gatwick.
There are five flights per week from Stansted and four flights per week from Luton. You can also fly twice a week from Manchester, Bristol, Leeds and Glasgow - making Maderia an excellent spot to escape the February cold.
