A spectacular day of celebrations took place in Newport to mark the Chinese New Year. Hundreds watched Saturday's lively procession through the city, many wearing red attire.

There were lion dancers and dragon outfits as the parade started at 10pm in Friars Walk and made its way to the Riverfront Theatre, where activities were held from 11am to 5pm including a shadow puppetry workshop, Chinese tea ceremony workshop, calligraphy station and a paper-cutting corner to create lanterns.

There was music throughout the day and at 5pm the free event culminated with a viewing of Disney's Turning Red. Scroll down to see our photographer's images of the celebrations.
