A generally healthy woman died of a sudden unexplained seizure, an inquest has heard. Stacey Dannielle Harris, 30, from Caerau in Cardiff, had been out at a local social club watching the football World Cup final with her husband David Harris and friends on December 18, 2022.

They had a few drinks then returned home at around 10pm and ate a takeaway. While at home Mrs Harris unexpectedly started shaking and going pale.

Her husband saw this and immediately phoned 999 and started performing CPR on the call handler’s advice. He then phoned his and Mrs Harris’ family who arrived along with ambulance staff. Despite their best efforts she died at around 12.40am on December 19.

The inquest was told 10 months before her death Mrs Harris had collapsed while brushing her teeth but came around quickly and did not have other symptoms of an epileptic fit. Other than this she had no relevant medical history and was described as “perfectly healthy” by her mother.

There was no history of allergies or anaphylaxis in her family. Her maternal grandfather died of a heart attack and her paternal grandfather had a pacemaker fitted with her father having a stent installed in recent years. Her mother has been diagnosed with epilepsy in her 50s after a 12-year history of symptoms.

Mrs Harris had Covid a short time before her death and tested negative on December 17. A toxicology report found no drugs in her system and an amount of alcohol the coroner said was not significant.

Pathologist Dr David Hywel Thomas and his colleagues conducted a post-mortem examination. From this and the evidence he heard he outlined two likely options which were that Mrs Harris suffered a seizure either due to epilepsy or heart arrhythmia, which can be passed on genetically. He could not conclude which was more likely on the balance of probabilities.

The coroner, Rachel Knight, considered the facts and recorded the medical cause of death as “sudden death due to seizure of unknown etiology (medical causes) resulting in a hypoxic brain injury.” Ms Knight reached a conclusion that Mrs Harris’ death was due to natural causes.

Mrs Harris was born in Fairwater in 1992 and moved to Caerau when she was a year old. She grew up there with her parents Pamela and Andrew Tuckfield and her brother Alex. She fulfilled her ambition of becoming a cabin crew member, working for FlyBe for several years until she lost her job in the pandemic, then becoming the manager of a local veterinary surgery.

Mrs Harris had been married to her partner David Harris since 2014 with the two having met as teenagers. It was described by Stacey’s mother as “a happy marriage with a fantastic relationship”.

The coroner told the family: "It is obvious how much you all loved and cared for [Mrs Harris]... it must have been a really frightening and horrifying thing to go through and I am really sorry you lost her in such a shocking way."
